How to access public records regarding purchase of home?

I just bought a house and found out that this information is available to the public. I have been getting things in the mail for mortgage life insurance. How do people access this information? Is there a way I can see it online for free?

You go to your county property appraiser’s page.

Some county websites do have an area to search property information.

You look in the county property tax files. Most of CA is online, as well as other states. Some area require you to access this in person.

You may have also signed something giving your mortgage company permission to sell your contact information.

Go to your local government website. Probably a county website. Often you can see on-line all recent deeds. You may also have a website that shows a map of all properties, you can find out all kinds of interesting info there too – size of house, when built, etc.

County Recorder’s and Tax Assessor’s records are public information by law.
