Which state has good public transportation and fun to visit for a week?
I’m not interested in MA or NY. I’m searching for a state that has good public transportation and has lots to see and do for about 5 days for grad students.

Well in five days, you could just start to see ONE major city. Like San Francisco Calif. That alone could take five days, then for another five you could start checking out some of the nearby cities.
Good luck.
Why not NY?
Have you considered Washington, DC? It is not a state, but it has a good train/subway system. All the main attractions are National Parks/Museums so they are FREE! You could easily spend a week on the National Mall seeing the Capitol, Smithsonians, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, or walking the tidal basin. You could take a train to the National Zoo, or over to Old Town Alexandria, or many other places.
No state has good public transportation; but many cities do.
My personal favorite city to visit is Chicago, Illinois. The list of things to do there is beyond count. You can buy transportation passes that will let you explore the city for one, two, three, and five days, with unlimited trips, using either their elevated train system and/or their bus system.
I second the last suggestion - Chicago!!!!
Transportation is good and there is a crapload to do. I believe they even sell the “citypass” which gets you into most of the places free or at a discount. You can check out the giant bean and the face fountain, there are a ton of shows, plenty of museums, things to do on the lake, great restaurants the list goes on and on…
